Final Words For Young Disciples!

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

The message is for young believers in a new church and it shows just how much belief Paul had in these young followers of Jesus.
What stands out to you about Paul’s style or approach with these young believers?  It really is like a letter being written from a father to his children as they leave home.
As you read the passage, look at what is optional and what isn’t…try to be kind to one another…but be joyful always.  It shows us that when it comes to others, we can’t control their response, but we can certainly do something about the way that we enter into conversations.

The Strength of Leadership v12,13

As Paul closes out his message, he focuses on how we can strengthen the ministry of leaders within the church.
·         An attitude of respect
He lays out two commands with regards to those who are called to lead within a church.  The scope of leadership isn’t limited just to pastors as we see it includes those who a) work hard among you b) have been given a ministry to oversee or a group of people c) admonish you -  now…you might wonder about admonish – sounds like a spanking?  the word here means to put in mind or better those who can “talk sense into you”  with the challenge to encourage our growth in our faith.  Anytime that you step up to lead, in essence you are placing a target on your back.  You will be judged and scrutinized more closely.
For example – Wendy who leads our women’s ministry, Kathy and Mary who led Compass, your small group leaders along with our LB and many others I could list.
Hold them in highest regard – respect them for the position they hold. Recognize what they have been called to do and look for ways to support them and pray for them.  It doesn’t mean that we don’t challenge them, but if we see something that needs to be addressed, TWO THINGS - we should be ready to provide a solution, done in the right spirit and do it in love.
(example)  We can all think of examples when you’ve been on a committee or team meeting. It causes disunity when people don’t submit to the leader and it might not be the way that you would do it, but you learn to be at peace.
·         An attitude of peace - Live at peace with each other –  As far as it depends on you, live at peace with others.  We can  do this without being sarcastic or act In a demeaning way.   Look at your tone, your body language.  Bitterness can also really go down deep and there are a lot of off shoots so always be ready to ask for forgiveness whether you are the leader or a member of the team when you have not displayed an attitude of peace.

The Support of The Body v14,15

Warn the idle – ataktous (Gr) It’s a military expression that means to break ranks, to get out of line. It speaks of those who refused to serve their country. It refers to those who are undisciplined and irresponsible, soldiers who are idle because they are out of position.  I was so encouraged by some people who have been only attending here for a month and they are already asking about getting involved in serving.  The email went on to share where their passion and gifting was, do you need a letter of reference?  We can get police checks…

Encourage the timid – better understood as fainthearted.  These are people who maybe have given their all in serving in a ministry and have nothing to show for their efforts.  They need others to come alongside them.
Be patient with everyone – Recognize that often in a completing a task, our default will be to do it ourselves because it will get done right; however, we need to involve others.  As a parent could easily do stuff for their kids, it is much better to come alongside them and work with them to gain the confidence to do it with us.  It takes more time and effort, but in the end we are all better because of it.

The Standard of Perfection v16-22
(Of course there are 7!)

We have all come across motivational speakers or great speakers that have a way of communicating their message whether it is done through pictures, props or repeating a simple phrase.  I also remember studying under profs who would give us the main points through alliteration

Paul in our scripture passage uses some of these very techniques that we are looking at today Paul gives us the 7 Ps (Pi’s) of being holy or blameless in preparation for Christ’s return as John spoke on last week
Starting in 1 Thessalonians 5:23, in Greek, the language in which Paul writes this letter to the Thessalonians, each of these phrases begins with the Greek letter ‘Pi’, which is roughly the equivalent of the English letter ‘P’.

Paul knows that Jesus may come back at any moment and so he comes up with this way for us to remember how to be blameless, how to be holy in preparation for this event.

These verses have been referred to as the standing orders of the gospel.  They are all imperatives in the present tense

This is a great challenge, isn’t it?  After all, we would have no problem if the text said,
“Rejoice sometimes”
“Pray occasionally”
“Give thanks when you feel like it."

It is those modifiers that really can trip us up!  The real impact of the gospel will be felt when we don’t feel like rejoicing, praying or giving thanks for that matter and yet that is the transformative nature of the gospel that changes us inside out that we have both the power and the desire to rejoice, to pray, to be thankful even in the most difficult moments of our life

P1           Rejoice Always

Now let’s be clear that we aren’t called to rejoice about everything, but learn how to rejoice in all circumstances.  My mom always had a way with this. She would say, “Jack, if this is the worst thing that is going to happen to you, that you are not doing too bad at all.”   It was a way of helping me learn to put every situation into its proper perspective.

The truth that we need to remember is that because of the faith we have with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26; Mark 10:27). We know that the war is already won (1 Corinthians 15; 1 John 5:4). Nothing that happens here on earth, in our lives, can change the salvation that has already been provided through our Lord. Nothing: the only question is whether we will take advantage of it, whether we will experience it or not!

The gospel Jesus said is like new wine and it should make our faces shine.  I know some people think if we
The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10) and “A cheerful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).

P2           Pray Without Ceasing

Ok, take a deep breath right now and slowly exhale it…without taking another breath and let’s try to hold that for 30 seconds

Prayer is your spiritual breathing.  This is just a simple illustration to remind us that trying to live without prayer will inevitably lead to greater pressure and anxiety on you as a person.
We know that we are in a spiritual battle. We know that we fight not as much against flesh and blood as we do against powers and principalities (Ephesians 6:12ff; cf. Romans 8:38; 1 Peter 3:22). We know that there is always going to be opposition to the gospel. We know that even though the gospel is good news, we know that there are people who hate the truth and we know that there are people who really don’t want to hear the truth.  My daughter Addi was sharing with me how she was encouraging her one friend in .  It turned out that her sister was listening in on the other line and at one point she yelled at Addi and said, “why can’t you just accept her for what she believes”  The truth was that she didn’t know what she believed and Addi was talking about her faith.

John refers to many of these people as antichrists (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 2:1-7; cf. 1 Corinthians 6:22). There are people who are simply anti-Christian.  This can refer to those who have ignored  the message.   There are people who will not only ignore, but those who will attack us instead. Recognize that you are constantly under attack and the way to combat that is to keep in constant communication with God.
Some have described this type of a praying spirit to using a fishing net.  When a fishing net is being used, it is in the water and you watch for signs of movement.  You need to have a strong sense of awareness and be focused in your approach.  When using a fishing net, you are often working with a partner and so this isn’t a solo project.

P3 Give Thanks In All Circumstances

This attitude of thanksgiving is so important. The Lord loves us. Do we really believe His promises that God will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5). that He will not give us more than we can bear. He loves all of us and He manages to work together even the most unpleasant situations somehow, someway for His Kingdom purposes, and because of this we can learn to be thankful in any given situation.

That God is sovereign.
That nothing happens by chance.
That God causes all things to work together for good for his children.
That hard times reveal our weakness, break our pride, and show us our total need for God.
That God has triumphed over sin and death through his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
That God uses the worst that happens to promote our spiritual growth.
That God is faithful even when we are faithless.
That God’s Word will be vindicated.
That God’s promises are true.
That evil will not reign forever.
That heaven is real.
That this world is not the “real” world.
That when we are weak, he is strong.
That his grace is sufficient for every situation.
That nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
That our salvation rests on God and not on us.
That there is no pit so deep that the love of God is not deeper still.
That the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin.
That God delights to save sinners.
That the Lord can soften the hardest heart.
That there are no impossible cases with God.
That even when we feel alone, we are never alone.
That our Father will not test us beyond what we can bear.
That the Holy Spirit abides with us always.
That the Lord Jesus feels our pain.
That the Holy Spirit prays for us when we are too weak to pray for ourselves.
That the Lord Jesus intercedes for us so that we are finally saved.
That God uses everything and wastes nothing.
That our doubts cannot cancel God’s work in us.
That someday we will be conformed to the image of Christ.
That God is faithful to finish his work in us.
That our hardships equip us to minister to others.
That we are invited to come boldly to the throne of grace.
That God’s plan far exceeds our limited imagination.
That weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
That we are still God’s children even when our faith falters.
That while we suffer outwardly, we are being renewed inwardly.
That our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal weight of glory.
From selected verses as compiled by Dr. Ray Pritchard

P4 Do not put out the Spirit’s fire

The Bible often uses the symbol of fire to picture the action of the Holy Spirit. Like a blazing fire, the Holy Spirit warms the heart with God’s presence.  The Spirit enlightens our mind to see things that we normally wouldn’t be aware of.  The HS empowers us and also burns away what is ineffective and unfruitful in our life.

When the fire of the Spirit  moves in a congregation, the results may be so supernatural that some believers may be tempted to “quench” the work of the Spirit because it will get personal
How might that happen? First, you might do it by quenching the Spirit’s work in your own life. That happens whenever we say no to God. Perhaps He is calling you to take a step of faith, to follow His divine guidance, to move out of your comfort zone, to exercise your spiritual gifts in a brand-new way, to demonstrate the reality of forgiveness and reconciliation in a broken relationship. By saying “no” in those situations is like throwing cold water on the fire of the Holy Spirit. Don’t be surprised when your life begins to grow cold.

Second, you might do it by stopping the Spirit’s work in someone else’s life. I Corinthians 12 speaks of various manifestations of the Holy Spirit. It speaks of differing operations and differing gifts. This can be a risky concept because we aren’t all alike!

AW Tozer “Society has an elaborate conspiracy to make us all alike.”  So, the message is stay balanced, don’t get too fanatical, too weird…just blend and unfortunately that mentality can easily spread into the church in a way that can suffocate the way that God has designed and created us to worship Him.
God made you an absolutely unique creation. He gave you a combination of gifts, talents and abilities that He gave to no one else in all the world. It’s all too easy to become harsh and critical toward others believers who don’t see things exactly as we do. It’s perfectly legitimate to say that the Holy Spirit may work in your life differently than He may work in my life.

We can also quench the work of the Holy Spirit in our church by critical attitudes as well.  We can be very quick to judge whether we think the Spirit of God is at work in someone’s life or not.

P5 Do not treat prophecies with contempt

The word for prophecy here is the ability to speak forth the mind and counsel of God.  It is the exercise of the gift in bringing confirmation to what God is already speaking into our hearts and lives with regards to his will, his direction and leading.

God may speak a word into your heart through a message that you hear, through the reading of Scripture and through others in the body as they speak into your life.
Sometimes it may not seem at the time to line up with what is happening in your life right now and it may also be something that God has yet to do in your life.

P6 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
The Christians in the first century town of Berea did this very thing in Acts 17:11. They were the next place that Paul and Silas visited after Thessalonica. They didn’t just accept what Paul was telling them carte blanche; they put his words to the test. They search the Scriptures; People sometimes make mistakes. We don’t always get it right.  It is for this reason that 1 Corinthians 14 shows us that we know in part and we prophecy in part…v12 goes on to say that we now see in a mirror dimly.  Good, God-honoring people sometimes make mistakes and when we hear someone share with us, we need to test it, approve it, check in it our own spirit.  Does it line up with Scripture? Pray about it and seek the peace of God to rule in your heart v15 ( be the umpire)

P7 Abstain from every kind of evil

John Wesley argued that this involves more than just avoiding vices. He says, quoting a non-Christian Epicurean poet, in a sermon entitled, ‘The Almost Christian’ that “Good men avoid sin from the love of virtue. Wicked men avoid sin from a fear of punishment.”

Avoiding evil and avoiding it because of a legitimate higher love for the presence of God is extremely important.  We have to believe that it is every bit worth the pursuit.

I believe as we make the effort, God meets us and takes us to greater heights, greater depths and leads us to greater intimacy.

The  Sustaining Presence of God v23-28….
(just in case you thought you were doing the work).

God doesn’t set people up for failure. He is a loving God. He would never ask from us that which is impossible. After all with God all things are possible, and in Verses 23 and 24, He tells us how it is indeed possible to be perfect even as God is perfect. He says He will do it. God himself will sanctify us through and through, keeping us blameless until the return of Christ.

one month away from Sparrow Hawk!

We have been accepted as a family to serve with North American Indigenous Ministries from June17th to July 10th this year.  It has been on our heart to serve with First Nations families and youth since the fall of last year and God has also been working in the lives of our children.

It has been encouraging to see Jordan leading by example by committing his vacation pay to help support this endeavor and seeing the willingness of all of our children to sacrifice in different ways.  I will be using my vacation time to be involved in this mission and we will be living on a First Nations reserve in Saskatchewan after our initial training at Echo Lake Bible Camp in Fort Qu'Appelle, SK.  We will be serving alongside the full time ministry staff that serve as missionaries with the Peepeekisis (Sparrow Hawk) reserve in Balcarres, SK

We will be involved in running youth and family programming and helping staff the summer camp for the children there.   It is our hope to better understand what life is like for families who live on the reserve and to inspire faith and trust in Jesus Christ for the life transformation that He can bring.

We know that the trip will also be a great experience for us as a family and we will learn much from their culture as well.  We want to see Jordan, Brynley, Addi and Rylan continue to grow in their sensitivity to serving others and realize just how blessed we are.

We ask that you would commit to praying for our family during this time as well as our time travelling by van to and from Saskatchewan!  We will head out from Guelph on Friday June 15th and arrive back on July 13th.   It will be one serious road trip for us and Jordan is looking forward to driving as well, not to mention Brynley who is ready to go get her G1!  Get ready for the straight stretches of the prairies!

A poem on love by Addi

Often in a world where followers of Jesus are marginalized, it was refreshing to hear that Addi was allowed to share her poem with her whole public school today!   Students in her class were asked to write a poem on love and she was chosen to read it for the "Multiple Intelligence Assembly".  Addi's teacher told her that she would have to leave out "His name is Jesus,' but she didn't accept that and so she decided to go to the vice principal.   The vice principal decided that she would be allowed...after all, she said, it is your opinion! :)

So here is her poem!

Love, what is the meaning of love?
Love is a strong affection that connects us in perfection; more that emotion because it is filled with devotion

Love is the greatest feeling that I feel for you every day.
You’re the one I can’t forget—
I think of you each morning, I think of you each night, always knowing that you will hold me tight
Sometimes I sit and wonder, why—why would you love me?
But I think to myself and smile knowing the list would go miles.

I love the way you make me happy, the ways you show how you care, knowing you’re always there.
I love how you’re the first person to talk to when my spirit needs a lift; your love is truly a gift.

This love no one can replace; it is a love that wants to be in first place.
It is a heart for the broken and the poor, his love sees people that others ignore.
He died on a cross with his arms open wide because as far as the east is from the west, his love crosses the divide

His name is Jesus; he calls us his friends if we would accept his love on us it will descend

Addi Ninaber

It was a love letter to Jesus...thank you for making my daughter bold and unashamed for You and not being willing to take no for an answer!

The Call To Moral Purity 2...loving others into freedom and forgiveness

Sexual sin and addiction is a problem for men.  We recognize that men are most vulnerable when they are hungry, angry, lonely or tired.  However, it is an issue for women as well.  Studies have shown that 7 out of 10 teenage girls agreed that it would have been easier for them to postpone sexual activity if they were able to have more open and honest conversations with their parents.  In every woman’s battle we read that while women are visually stimulated as well, their battle is typically much more subtle and begins in a heart full of disappointment.  It is her disappointment in men, circumstances, God, life, money, kids and her future that can cause her heart to wander.

I want to talk about the qualities of those who want to love others into freedom and forgiveness.

It is a love that doesn’t give up on people.

1 Thessalonians 4:9 Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. 10 And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.

Following the strong teaching on holiness and honoring God with our bodies, Paul brings his message full circle and comes back to the subject of love.   We are called to a persistent love that doesn’t give up, a love that doesn’t condemn the person, but loves them into pure holiness and this kind of love takes time, prayer and devotion.  It is a friendship of love that doesn’t give up.  Paul is just as passionate about us loving each other as he is about living lives of purity.  We see the strong imperative coming out here in the word being used ‘urge’.
Be persistent, don’t give up.  We read in Galatians 6: 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.  All too often we give up if we don’t see results right away.

1 Peter 4:8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.  It is the kind of love that says I know that you are struggling, I realize that this is an addiction, but we are going to win the battle together.  You are not alone.  A huge part of the battle is in our own minds because we believe that we have to go it alone, that if I share what I’m dealing with that others will think less of me.  This happens because we believe we have to fix the person…”what can I do, this has to change right away”.  However it is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict of sin, righteousness and judgement.  John 16:8  Sin starts to lose it’s powerful grip when it is brought out into the light and we confess our sins to each other.  What does James 5:16 state?

It is up to God to bring healing, not you!  Every situation is so unique and we need the leading of the HS here.  It is God’s power to restore.  Sometimes as Christians we are looking for cookie cutter solutions…one size fits all and they are just not there.

We have seen people freed from sexual sin and find victory in an evening and for others it has been a continual ongoing battle that they take to the Lord each day.

Paul is appealing again that they would show this kind of love.

The only way to openness and trust is when we know that we are deeply loved.  He is really appealing to the truth that if we love each other well it really can conquer a multitude of sins.

It is a love that believes in victory

Colossians 2:13,14,15 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
We have all read and admired stories of athletes who have guaranteed victories for their team and then went on to actually accomplish what they pronounced with their words.
Here’s the truth, Jesus guaranteed victory on the cross for you.  There is no sin that should rule or dominate over you.  Our most decisive victory took place before we even set our foot into the game. It was done by Jesus and it broke the power of strongholds.
He did something 2000 years ago before we came into existence and secured our rescue as well as the transformation that would result.  He did it all for us decisively without any of our help.  So, when we put our faith in him and His sufficiency for dealing with our sin, we stand in his righteousness alone.  It is His righteousness that counts not ours.
Don’t miss those last words of the verse, they are crucial and that is the record of debt that stood against us.  He set it aside and nailed it to the cross and God did that for us in the precious gift of His Son’s sacrifice.

The glorious truth is that God took the record of all your sins – all your sexual failures that placed you into a suffocating debt to sin and shame and he didn’t hold them up in front of you and throw them in your face.  No, he placed them into the palm of His Son’s hand and nailed them to the cross.

We need followers of Jesus who will fight anything that diminishes the fullness of His presence in our lives.  We must  fight with the Holy Spirit’s power against anything that threatens to replace Jesus as the supreme treasure of our lives.  However we are stronger and more resilient when we fight together and we fight with the truth of His Word and promises for us.

Do you have a word that you battle the enemy with?  Has God given you a Scripture that you do battle with and proclaim for yourself in victory or for others?
Now if we only see in the cross of Jesus a free ticket to keep on sinning, then we have yet to understand the price of our victory and we need to pray to get a fresh reminder of God’s holiness and glory.
Romans 6  Freedom is not freedom to keep on sinning, but to experience something much more satisfying.

Often one of the biggest challenges that I have discovered is that others accept Christ’s forgiveness; however, they still  haven’t learned to forgive themselves and so they hold on to their failure, remind themselves of their sin and mistakes almost as a way of self-imposing punishment on themselves.
This happens whether subconscious or conscious and is another area that Satan loves to steal, kill and destroy and again we need to remember there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.

I had a friend Paul who was struggling with sexual addiction and we went through the Steps To Freedom by Neil Anderson.  Part of our accountability strategy was to meet weekly as we walked together through ‘Bondage Breaker’  and he learned to:

RUN FAST! as much as is possible and reasonable the sights and situations that arouse unfitting desire. I say "possible and reasonable" because some exposure to temptation is inevitable. And I say "unfitting desire" because not all desires for sex, food, and family are bad. We know when they are unfitting and unhelpful and on their way to becoming enslaving. We know our weaknesses and what triggers them.  1 Corinthians 6:18-20

MOVE  into a useful activity away from idleness and other vulnerable behaviors. Lust grows fast in the place of idleness. Find a good work to do, and do it with all your might. "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord" (Romans 12:11). "Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58).  Paul was very active in a basketball outreach that we started to reach out to his peers for Christ.
JUST SAY NO to every lustful thought within five seconds. And say it with the authority of Jesus Christ. "In the name of Jesus, NO!" You don't have much more than five seconds. Give it more unopposed time than that, and it will lodge itself with such force as to be almost immovable. Say it out loud if you dare. Be tough and warlike. As John Owen said, "Be killing sin or it will be killing you." Strike fast and strike hard. "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" ( James 4:7).

RENEW YOUR MIND   Saying "no" will not suffice. You must move from defense to offense. We have to move from defense to offense.   Attack the promises of sin with the promises of Christ. The Bible calls lusts "deceitful desires" (Ephesians 4:22). They lie. They promise more than they can deliver. Deceit is defeated by truth. Ignorance is defeated by knowledge. It must be glorious truth and beautiful knowledge.

FIX your eyes on the promise and the pleasure of Christ firmly in your mind until it pushes the other images out. "Fix your eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 3:1). Here is where many fail. They give in too soon. They say, "I tried to push it out, and it didn't work." I ask, "How long did you try?" How hard did you exert your mind? The mind is a muscle. You can flex it!
Hold the promise of Christ before your eyes.

Paul has held on to the promise and I can testify to God’s blessing in his relationship with his wife, Lori Ann and their children.

It is a love that is made complete in restoration.

Galatians 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

The call here is to first recognize the fact that “but for the grace of God, go I”.  It is the realization that I never get to the place where I look at someone trapped in an addiction and act in pride and say, “that will never happen to me.”

To restore gently means that we go beyond the surface of the sin to understand what the root causes are.  It has been said that sin is often meeting legitimate needs in illegitimate ways.

Often we have to trace the cycle of sexual failure in our own life, identify and forgive those who have sinned against us.  This often takes a spiritual believer and/ or a wise and trusted counsellor who can restore someone to once again experiencing freedom and wholeness.
For others they look at their failure and think, “well, I’ve messed up in this area once already, it really doesn’t matter anymore”  BUT IT DOES!  Jesus is telling you that you do matter and you do have hope and a bright future.

Philippians 3:13,14  Forgetting those things that are behind and pressing on to that which is ahead…

There is also a decision that we need to say, “I’m breaking the chain” because it has been broken in Jesus.  There are many who have endured sexual abuse as children and often the chain of abuse is repeated later in life towards others.  At some point, we have to say, “ I will not act or offend in the way that I have been offended’

V2 We are told to carry each other`s burdens

I have read stories and I`m sure you have too of people who found extraordinary strength in the most desperate of situations.  When my brother Edwin slid his motorcycle under a truck, someone came on the scene to lift the front of the truck so they were able to free him.  He was strong, but this was amazing.  Edwin spoke to me of how he believed it was an angel that was there that day.

I believe in a God who desires to give us extraordinary strength to lift up our brothers.

HOPE for the Defeated

Perhaps you have already blown it so badly that you feel there is no hope for you. It could be that you have burning memories of recent moral failure.

Possibly it is the feeling that this is a never ending cycle and you have been here, done that.
I want us to watch this video to bring light to our understanding because maybe, just maybe you are starving Jesus.

Ask the Holy Spirit to awaken you to a new hunger for the Person and the Presence of Jesus!

ENJOY a superior satisfaction. Cultivate the capacities for pleasure in Christ. One reason lust reigns in so many is that Christ has so little appeal. We default to deceit because we have little delight in Christ. Don't say, "That's just not me." What steps have you taken to waken affection for Jesus? Have you fought for joy? Don't be fatalistic. You were created to treasure Christ with all your heart – more than you treasure sex or sugar. If you have little taste for Jesus, competing pleasures will triumph. Plead with God for the satisfaction you don't have: "Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days" (Psalm 90:14). Then look, look, look at the most magnificent Person in the universe until you see him the way he is.    John Piper

We don’t have to let the sins of the past control our future.  God loves to wipe our slate clean and restore the foundation.

Is there any hope for you or must you remained stained and soiled for life?   Certainly there are painful consequences for sin; however, I have some better news for you. Jesus has something he wants to say to you. “Rise and walk,” our Lord proclaims to every broken sinner. “Go and sin no more.” You can’t do a thing to change the past and it’s a waste of time to try. However, you can do something about the future. By God’s grace you can be clean and pure from this day forward. You don’t have live in guilt or fear or shame any longer. Rise and walk, O child of God. Get up out of the muck and mire of shameful defeat. In the name of Jesus, rise and walk!

A New Commitment

God, I’m not satisfied with my appetite for Jesus, I know there is so much more.
I’ll never forget a friend Rhea sharing with me how she struggled with the party scene and often felt compelled to go and drink.  She was a believer, but it really didn’t mean much to her until one night while hanging over a toilet she cried out to God, there has to be more than this and God met her right there in her brokenness.

God, may a pure and holy devotion to Jesus outweigh, out match, out distance any other affection in my life by the power of your holiness.

As we hunger and thirst after righteousness,  I believe God will pour out a love so great in us…

·         that we will not give up on others
·         that we will believe in victory
·         that we will be made complete in restoration
